Description
Cuvée Sainte Catherine is Domaine Weinbach's Riesling from the oldest vines on the granite grand cru of Schlossberg.
Schlossberg rises directly behind the Clos des Capucins at Kaysersberg and was the first vineyard in Alsace to be classified as a grand cru, in 1975. Its terraces run from roughly 230 to 400 metres on granite with a thin, mineral-rich sandy topsoil that drains hard and gives Riesling a taut, stony line rather than breadth. The Clos itself was laid out by Capuchin friars in 1612 and sold off after the Revolution; the Faller brothers bought it in 1898, and it passed through Théo Faller to his wife Colette and their daughters Laurence and Catherine. Catherine has led the domaine since 2016 with her sons Eddy and Théo. The 38 hectares are farmed organically and biodynamically, certified by Ecocert and Demeter, at yields of about 30 hectolitres per hectare. Sainte Catherine comes from Schlossberg vines of sixty to seventy years, and the Rieslings ferment spontaneously in large old casks that add no flavour of their own.
Approachable young but better for five years and capable of far longer. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, choucroute or a fresh goat's cheese.
