Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine Riesling 2022

Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine Riesling is drawn from five plots of 60-year-old vines at the heart of the Schlossberg slope.

Schlossberg, above Kientzheim and Kaysersberg, was the first vineyard in Alsace to be classified as a grand cru, and its steep terraces of weathered granite are the classic address for dry Riesling in the region. Domaine Weinbach farms biodynamically here, and Cuvée Sainte Catherine is its most complete expression of the site. The wine takes its name from Saint Catherine's day, 25 November: early releases were picked on or near that date and drew their depth from the long Alsace autumn, though harvest now often falls as much as a month earlier. The five parcels lie in the middle of the slope, where sun exposure and mineral-rich granitic soils give a deep, layered and resolutely dry Riesling. Winemaking follows the standard Schlossberg bottling exactly, with the fruit raised for 14 months in the domaine's old oval casks; only the concentration and intensity differ.

It can be broached young but repays ten to fifteen years in the cellar; serve with sashimi, roast pork or Munster cheese at 10-12°C.
