Description
Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling comes from three of the family’s highest parcels on the hill that in 1975 became the first vineyard in Alsace to be classified grand cru.
The Schlossberg rises north of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim to between 230 and 350 metres, a granitic outcrop long regarded as one of the world’s outstanding Riesling sites; the quality of its wines was on record as early as the 15th century. The Faller family at Domaine Weinbach are the largest landowners on the hill, with eight hectares, and bottle their Rieslings from it parcel by parcel according to vine age and altitude. This wine is drawn from three parcels at the top of the slope, between 320 and 420 metres. The soils there are shallow and rocky — eroded granite with a reddish tinge and a high magnesium content — and vigour is correspondingly low. The farming is biodynamic. Altitude, poor soils and very small yields together give a dry, deeply mineral Riesling with the freshness to carry its flesh.
Drinking now but built to run for two decades. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled trout, roast pork or a ripe Munster.
