Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Sélection de Grains Nobles Riesling 500ml 2017

Weinbach Schlossberg Sélection de Grains Nobles Riesling is a biodynamic sweet Riesling from Alsace's first designated grand cru, in 500ml.

The Schlossberg rises directly behind the domaine at Kaysersberg, a steep granite slope terraced over centuries and the first vineyard in Alsace to be classified grand cru. Riesling is its signature variety, and the granite gives a firm, mineral spine that matters greatly in a wine of this sweetness. Domaine Weinbach, run by the Faller family, farms biodynamically. Sélection de Grains Nobles bottlings are much scarcer and richer than Vendanges Tardives, demanding a berry-by-berry harvest and, for Riesling, at least 256 grams per litre of sugar at picking, with a far higher proportion of botrytised fruit. This was wild-fermented and aged 18 months in stainless steel, finishing at 10.5 per cent alcohol with 144 grams per litre of residual sugar balanced by 7.6 grams of acidity, which is the whole argument for the wine.

Approachable now and built to age for several decades. Serve at 8-10°C with blue cheese, a fruit tart or on its own after dinner.
