Description

Weinbach Alsace La Colline du Château Pinot Noir comes from steeply terraced granite vines on the Schlossberg hill, planted before the clonal era in the 1960s.

The name refers to the cadastral title of the lieu-dit, Au Château, and to the ruined Château de Kaysersberg that stands above the town, a short walk from the western boundary of the Schlossberg grand cru. Domaine Weinbach works these terraces by hand, as the gradient allows nothing else, and the vines date from the 1960s, pre-dating the clonal selections now common in Alsace. The granite here gives a more linear and smoky mineral character than the rounder, more supple Pinot Noir the domaine grows on the limestone of Altenbourg, according to Eddy Faller. The wine was fermented with 50% whole bunches and aged for two years in Burgundian barrels, 20% of them new. Very little is made, and the domaine's own team had not tasted the release at the time of allocation.

Worth cellaring three to eight years, or decant if opening young. Serve at 16-18°C with roast quail, veal or a mushroom and thyme tart.
