Weinbach Alsace Les Treilles du Loup Gewurztraminer 2023

Weinbach Les Treilles du Loup Gewürztraminer is an off-dry Alsace white from 40- to 50-year-old vines on sandy silt over granite pebbles.

Domaine Weinbach farms biodynamically from the Clos des Capucins at Kaysersberg, and this parcel lies in the Wolfreben lieu-dit in the Kaysersberg valley, between the clos and the village itself. The soils are sandy silt over granite pebbles, warm ground on which Gewürztraminer ripens early, producing wines with complex aromatics and real concentration. The Faller family’s style with this variety is marked by restraint and savouriness rather than the confected sweetness common elsewhere, and the wine is bottled with 12.5 g/L residual sugar, enough to round the palate without reading as a dessert wine. It is a good introduction to what the domaine does with the grape at a more approachable level than its grand cru bottlings.

Drinking well now and holding for eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with tarte flambée, spiced Asian dishes or a soft washed-rind cheese.
