Description
Weinbach Les Vignes du Prêcheur is a dry Alsace field blend co-fermented from five varieties grown in a single vineyard below the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf.
Alsace is usually bottled as a single variety, so a co-planted, co-fermented blend is a deliberate step back towards how the region worked before varietal labelling took hold. The site lies on sandy silt soils not far from the domaine at Kientzheim, ground that suits fresh, dry, early-drinking whites rather than the richer styles of the grand cru slopes. Domaine Weinbach farms organically and is in conversion to biodynamic certification. The blend runs 40 per cent Riesling, 30 per cent Auxerrois, 20 per cent Pinot Gris, 5 per cent Muscat and 5 per cent Sylvaner, all picked and pressed as whole bunches, fermented with wild yeasts in old oak vats and bottled unfined after eight months on lees. The wine carries the domaine's usual intensity in a lighter, more chiselled frame, with a light phenolic grip on the close.
Best over the next three to five years. Serve at 10-12°C with Vietnamese chicken salad, pork terrine or a mild Munster.
