Description

The everyday white of an estate otherwise known for grand cru Riesling, grown on the sandy, gravelly ground of the Clos des Capucins and around it.

Wines labelled Pinot Blanc in Alsace are conventionally a blend of true Pinot Blanc with Auxerrois, the latter giving a rounder, softer texture and slightly lower acidity. Domaine Weinbach works from the Clos des Capucins at Kientzheim, a five-hectare walled enclosure founded by Capuchin monks in 1612 and in the Faller family since 1898; Catherine Faller has led it with her sons Eddy and Théo since 2016. The Clos sits on sandy-silty soils over gravel and granite pebbles that warm quickly, so its wines come forward earlier than those from the slope sites above. The estate's 38 hectares are certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter, organic since 1990 and biodynamic across all plots from 2005. Fermentation is spontaneous and ageing takes place in large old casks, with no new oak.

Drink young, within three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with quiche, charcuterie or a simple roast chicken.
