Description
Weinbach's Pinot Blanc is a dry blend of 70% Auxerrois and 30% Pinot Blanc from the Clos des Capucins and the foot of the Altenbourg.
In Alsace the label term Pinot Blanc covers varietal wines and blends containing any proportion of Auxerrois, a separate variety that DNA work has shown to be a cross of Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir. Domaine Weinbach farms biodynamically at Kientzheim, below the Schlossberg, and treats these two grapes with the same care as its Riesling. The Clos des Capucins vines are around 45 years old, and the second parcel sits on limestone and clay at the base of the Altenbourg vineyard. As with the dry Rieslings, the fruit is pressed as whole bunches, and the wine is now raised for eight months in large-format wood where earlier vintages stayed in tank. The result is fleshy and mouth-filling, with orchard fruit and chamomile over a textural core.
Drink now to five years, with charcuterie, quiche or roast pork, at 10 to 12°C.
