Weinbach Alsace RW0 2020

RWØ stands for Riesling Wolfreben Zero Input, Weinbach's experimental dry Riesling made in stainless steel with no additions at all.

The Faller family farm the Clos des Capucins at Kaysersberg biodynamically, and this bottling is the domaine's laboratory. It comes from a parcel of Riesling lying between the Clos des Capucins vineyard and the village of Kaysersberg, on sand and silt over granite pebbles, soils close in character to those of the Clos itself. Sitting off the hillsides, the site ripens earlier than the slope parcels, which gives complex aromatics and considerable concentration. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel with no oak and zero additions, then left ten months on lees before bottling. The wine has the phenolic grip and the rocky, saline cast that comes with minimal intervention, lit from behind by the graceful acidity Alsace Riesling reliably provides, and it is made with the same thoroughness as everything else in the Weinbach cellar.

Rewarding a year or two in bottle and good for the medium term. Serve at 10 to 12°C with grilled fish, charcuterie or a vegetable tart.
