Weinbach Alsace 'S' Pinot Noir 2020

Weinbach 'S' Pinot Noir comes from terraced granite vines at the foot of the Schlossberg grand cru and has since been renamed La Colline du Château.

The new name comes from the lieu-dit's cadastral title, Au Château, a reference to the ruins of the Château de Kaysersberg that stand a short distance from Schlossberg's western boundary. The label on this release still carries the earlier 'S' because Weinbach had to bottle that way for the United States market. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and planted to pre-clonal 1960s material on steep terraces. Compared with the limestone of Altenbourg, Eddy Faller explains, these granitic soils give a more linear and smoky mineral style, where the limestone-raised wine is rounder and more supple. The fruit was fermented with 50 per cent whole bunches and aged two years in Burgundian barrels, 20 per cent of them new.

Approachable from two years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom dishes or charcuterie.
