Description
Weinbach Alsace Théo Riesling comes exclusively from the domaine's walled monopole at the base of the Schlossberg hill.
Le Clos des Capucins takes its name from the Capuchin friars who arrived in the area in 1619, and it has surrounded the Weinbach cellars since the Faller family acquired the property in 1898. The Clos is sheltered from wind by the hills and walls around it, and its soils are sand, alluvial pebbles and granitic gravel rather than the harder rock of the Schlossberg grand cru above. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. Low-cropping vines on that sandy ground typically give a supple, pithy Riesling that is approachable young, which is what marks the Cuvée Théo out from the domaine's grand cru bottlings. As with all Weinbach dry Rieslings, the fruit is pressed as whole bunches, fermented without any yeast addition and matured in very old oak casks, here for ten months.
Drinking well now and capable of eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, choucroute or a fresh goat's cheese.
