Weinbach Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvee Sainte-Catherine Museum Release 2007

Cuvée Sainte-Catherine is Domaine Weinbach's Riesling from the granite grand cru of Schlossberg, released from the domaine's cellar with bottle age.

Schlossberg, above Kientzheim, was the first vineyard in Alsace to be classified as a grand cru. Its terraced slopes face south on weathered granite, a soil that drains sharply and gives Riesling a taut, citrus-driven line rather than breadth. The Cuvée Sainte-Catherine takes its name from the feast day of Saint Catherine on 25 November, traditionally the start of the pruning year, and the fruit is drawn from the later pickings in the domaine's Schlossberg holdings. Domaine Weinbach works from the walled Clos des Capucins in Kientzheim, farming biodynamically, harvesting by hand in successive passes and fermenting slowly with indigenous yeasts in large old oak foudres. Time in the domaine's cellar has allowed the wine's early austerity to unwind into a more savoury, honeyed register.

Drinking well now. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, choucroute or a mild Asian-spiced fish dish.
