Weingut Bernhard Ott Ried Stein Engabrunn Grüner Veltliner comes from a stony terraced hillside at Engabrunn, a deliberate departure from the deep loess the family is known for.

Engabrunn lies in the Kamptal, across the Danube from the Ott family's home at Feuersbrunn in the Wagram, and Ried Stein is exactly what its name suggests: a steep site on weathered primary rock rather than loess. The contrast is the point, because thin stony soils over hard bedrock make the vine work in a quite different way from the water holding loess of the home vineyards, and growers have long prized the site for it. The estate farms biodynamically and works here as it does at home, with hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation and long ageing on fine lees in large neutral wood.

Give it several years in bottle and serve at around 12 degrees with roast pork, veal or firm white fish.
