Description
Ried Kirchweingarten Höflein is a single-vineyard Blaufränkisch from a gentle south-facing slope below the village church at Höflein.
Höflein sits about 12 kilometres west of Prellenkirchen in Carnuntum, the wine region east of Vienna where Dorli Muhr has concentrated her work on Blaufränkisch. This vineyard lies immediately below the church on a soft, south-facing incline, with soils of limestone interleaved with layers of clay and loess. The clay and loess hold more water than the stony Spitzerberg sites, and the gentler gradient and southern aspect make for steady ripening, so the wine tends to be rounder and more openly fruited than the estate's ridge-grown bottlings. The fruit is fermented wild and macerated in large wooden vessels with no temperature control, then aged for 20 months and racked once before bottling without filtration. Nothing in the cellar is designed to add flavour; the wood is old and the handling minimal.
Approachable now and good for six to eight years. Serve at 16–18°C with roast pork, goulash or a semi-hard alpine cheese.
