Description
Ried Spitzerberg-Obere Roterd is a single-vineyard Blaufränkisch from the western slope of the Spitzerberg in Carnuntum.
The Spitzerberg is a limestone ridge at the eastern end of Austria, swept by the Pannonian wind and long regarded as the country's finest site for Blaufränkisch. Obere Roterd is a sub-vineyard of some three hectares, of which Dorli Muhr farms 1.3, planted between 1965 and 2004 on the western slope at 210 to 240 metres. The soil is rich in limestone with sandy topsoil and stones and boulders scattered throughout, conditions that restrict vigour and push the variety towards its more mineral, savoury register rather than its fruitier one. The fruit ferments wild and macerates in large wooden vessels, after which the wine spends 20 months in élevage with just a single racking. There is no new oak and no attempt to soften the wine's natural firmness.
Rewards a few years in bottle and will hold for a decade. Serve at 16–18°C with roast venison, braised beef or mature Gruyère.
