Weingut Dorli Muhr Ried Spitzerberg-Obere Spitzer 2019

Obere Spitzer is a single-vineyard Blaufränkisch from the steepest part of the Spitzerberg, at the far eastern edge of Austria's Carnuntum.

The Spitzerberg is a dry limestone hill in the Hainburg range, swept by warm Pannonian wind from the east and cold air off the Danube, and it has become the reference site for Austrian Blaufrankisch of a fine-boned, savoury sort. Dorli Muhr, who was born in the village below, did much to bring the hill back into serious cultivation. The Obere Spitzer sub-vineyard covers almost seven hectares on the extreme western slope at 210 metres. Her single hectare of Blaufrankisch there dates from 1955 and sits on the steepest part of the slope, where the soils are sandy and dry. The fruit is lightly crushed, then macerated and wild-fermented in small open-top vats with a small proportion of stems and only gentle foot-treading. Maturation runs 30 months in 600-litre old wood, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Open now with air, or cellar for a decade; serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, braised beef cheek or paprika-spiced pork.
