Weingut Dr. H. Thanisch Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese comes from Berncasteler Doctor, the tiny, steeply terraced vineyard regarded as one of the most celebrated sites in the Mosel.

Berncasteler Doctor covers only a few hectares of steep, south-facing slate directly above the town of Bernkastel and has been prized as one of the Mosel's finest sites since the nineteenth century, historically commanding some of the highest prices of any vineyard at the region's Trier wine auctions. Weingut Dr. H. Thanisch has been part-owner of this famous vineyard since Dr. Hugo Thanisch acquired holdings there in the 1880s, and the family has farmed it ever since as part of a Mosel winegrowing history stretching back generations. The vines are tended by hand on slopes too steep for machinery, in soils of weathered Devonian slate that give the estate's wines their distinctive minerality.

As an Auslese, it is made from riper, more selectively picked fruit than the estate's Kabinett and Spätlese wines, giving a fuller, more concentrated style balanced by the vineyard's natural acidity.
