Wickhams Road Gippsland Pinot Noir 2024

Wickhams Road Gippsland Pinot Noir is a cool-climate Pinot Noir from an eight-hectare vineyard in Gippsland.

Franco D'Anna and his team took this Gippsland site on in 2011. Eight hectares planted only to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with vines approaching twenty years of age, and the crew drives down weekly to farm it with the same attention they give the Yarra home block. Like the Yarra vineyard it is cool and free-draining, and sheep graze through it in winter to keep the grass and weeds down. Fruit was destemmed without crushing and left on skins for a little over three weeks before pressing to old French barriques for a short maturation. For the money, this is about as good as Australian Pinot Noir gets.

Red cherry, cranberry and a savoury, earthy thread, light-bodied with fine tannin and bright acidity that keeps the finish clean. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, a touch cooler than you might expect. Grilled salmon, roast chicken or a charcuterie board all work.
