Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is a whole-bunch inflected Pinot Noir from the Upper Yarra Valley.

The 2023 marks a shift: almost all of the fruit came off the estate vineyard high in the Upper Yarra, with just 15 per cent drawn from small parcels at Yarra Glen and Kangaroo Ground. About a fifth of the ferment went in as whole bunches, contributing spice and finer tannin. Twenty days on skins followed, then pressing to French barriques, mostly old with only 5 per cent new, for a short maturation. Franco d'Anna makes a great deal of wine at this price point without ever cutting a corner in the vineyard, which is the whole trick.

Juicy and light-bodied, with rhubarb, red cherry and a peppery, stemmy lift over fine-grained tannin and a clean finish. Serve at 14 degrees, slightly cool. Roast chicken, grilled salmon or a plate of cured meats and pickles.
