Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2024

Wickhams Road Yarra Valley Pinot Noir is a light-bodied Upper Yarra Pinot Noir raised mostly in seasoned French oak.

Upper Yarra fruit does the work in this wine, some of it from Hoddles Creek itself, and the elevation up here keeps the reds light on their feet and naturally fresh. Roughly 20 per cent of the ferment went in as bunches, which is where the spice and the fine tannin come from. Twenty days on skins followed, then pressing to French barriques, almost all of them seasoned with only a token 5 per cent new, and a short maturation before bottling. The second label at Hoddles Creek gets the same vineyard attention as the estate wines; the difference is in the élevage, not the care.

Red berries, a twist of black pepper and something faintly sappy, with silky tannin and a bright, mouthwatering finish that invites the next glass. Serve at 14 degrees, or lightly chilled in warm weather. Charcuterie, roast chicken or grilled tuna.
