Description
Wickhams Road Yea Valley Riesling is a dry Riesling from vines over twenty years old on duplex clay near Yea.
The vineyard is the same duplex clay site south of the Yea Valley that supplies the Cabernet Franc, and the Riesling vines there are comfortably past twenty years of age. Picking happens early in the cool of the morning, and the fruit soaks for 12 to 14 hours at the winery, then goes through the destemmer and a light crush on the way to the press. Some of the juice went into large old barrels to ferment, the balance into stainless steel. Lees were stirred every second week, and bottling happened at the start of August. Barrel-fermented Riesling is unusual in Australia, and it shows in the texture.
Lime, green apple and wet stone, dry and taut, with an unexpected breadth in the middle from the barrel portion. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. Oysters, Thai salad, salt-and-pepper squid or a slab of pork belly.
