Windows Estate Petit Lot Chardonnay 2023

Windows Estate Petit Lot Chardonnay is an organic Margaret River white drawn from two mineral blocks.

The vessels changed for this vintage. Bunches were pressed to clay as well as to French barriques and puncheons, half new and half a year old, for fermentation and eleven months on lees, with 50 per cent malolactic conversion. The fruit again comes from Violette's and Lucas's, planted in 2006 to Gingin and three Dijon clones on karri loam over clay and granite, both certified organic. The 2023 season in the west was a strong one, warm by day and cool at night, which built flavour without losing acidity. Chris Davies picks and ferments each clone separately.

Grapefruit, white flowers and a cool, clay-derived minerality, with fleshy weight and a mouth-watering finish. Twelve degrees, in a proper glass. Serve it with scallops, roast chicken with lemon, or a soft washed-rind cheese. It will keep building for five or six years yet.
