Windows Estate Petit Lot Syrah 2021

Windows Estate Petit Lot Syrah is a perfumed, cool-grown red from Margaret River.

Finesse is the aim here, not power. Loam over gravel drains well and keeps the vines in check, and Chris Davies spends most of his working life among them, pruning and managing canopy with a light hand. The fruit that results is clean and intensely flavoured, with high-toned pepper and spice. A small parcel of whole bunches went into the ferment, and a dash of Viognier from the easternmost corner of the Home Block was included to push the aromatics further. A traditional basket press moved the wine to French oak barrels for twelve months.

Violet, raspberry and cracked pepper, mid-weight and fine-boned, with a long spicy finish. Serve at 15-16 degrees. It goes with duck, lamb cutlets off the grill, or a lentil and mushroom braise. A short chill on a warm evening suits it well.
