Wirra Wirra Church Block Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2023

Wirra Wirra Church Block Cabernet Shiraz Merlot is the McLaren Vale blend that has carried the Wirra Wirra name since the early 1970s.

First made in 1972, a few years after Greg Trott and his cousin Roger revived the old Wigley estate, Church Block has become one of South Australia's best-known red blends. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the frame, with blackberry, plum and a savoury, herbal edge; Shiraz brings generosity and mid-palate depth; and Merlot softens the joins. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, moderated by sea breezes from Gulf St Vincent, gives ripe, even fruit, and the wine is built to be approachable on release. The 2023 shows dark berries, five-spice and graphite over grainy, even tannins, finishing long and savoury.

Decant for half an hour if you're opening it young, and serve at around 16 to 18 degrees. Roast lamb with rosemary, beef and mushroom pie or a hard cheese platter all work well, and it will sit happily in the cellar for several years.
