Wirra Wirra Farmer's Heart Grenache 2023

Wirra Wirra Farmer's Heart Grenache is a savoury, red-fruited McLaren Vale Grenache with fine, gently grippy tannins.

McLaren Vale has some of the oldest Grenache plantings in Australia, and the variety has enjoyed a renaissance there as winemakers moved towards fresher, more perfumed styles. Wirra Wirra, first planted in 1894 by Robert Strangways Wigley and revived by Greg Trott in 1969, has been part of that shift. The 2023 shows striking red fruit, star anise, dried herbs and rose petal, with touches of candle wax and white strawberry compote. A savoury, umami depth and warm spice sit within creamy red fruits, and fine tannins, likened by the winemakers to green tea, give the palate direction. It relies on perfume and texture instead of sheer weight.

Aim for around 15 to 17 degrees when serving. Grenache like this is very food friendly: think duck, roast pork, mushroom dishes, lamb with herbs or a Moroccan tagine.
