Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2022

Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz is the flagship McLaren Vale Shiraz of Wirra Wirra, named for founder Robert Strangways Wigley.

Wigley established the estate in 1894, and the wine carries his initials as a tribute to that beginning. It draws on some of the best Shiraz parcels available to the winery each year, selected for concentration and fine structure, and is matured in oak before release. McLaren Vale's warm, maritime-influenced climate and old vineyards on a mix of sand, clay and ironstone give the fruit depth and richness. The 2022 is inky purple, with dark plum, mocha and nutmeg alongside a savoury charcuterie note, then layers of mulberry compote, baking spice and dark chocolate on a plush, well-integrated palate.

Decant for an hour and serve at around 17 to 18 degrees. It deserves a special occasion: slow-roasted beef rib, braised oxtail or a wintry lamb shoulder. Well stored, it should cellar for a decade or more.
