Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2023

Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz is a powerful yet poised McLaren Vale Shiraz and the top red in the Wirra Wirra line-up.

The three letters stand for Robert Strangways Wigley, the South Australian who founded the winery in 1894. Greg Trott rebuilt the estate from 1969, and RSW honours its founder with the pick of each vintage's Shiraz. The region's Mediterranean climate, with warm days and breezes from Gulf St Vincent, delivers ripe, concentrated fruit that stands up well to oak maturation. In 2023 the wine shows fleshy plum, blackberry, woody spice and charcuterie, with red plum, milk chocolate, coffee and vanilla bean on the palate and powdery tannins through a long, savoury finish.

Open it at around 17 to 18 degrees after an hour in a decanter, or tuck it away to develop over the next ten years or more. Serve it with beef Wellington, venison or a rich mushroom and red wine stew.
