Description
Yalumba Antique Muscat is a rich, long-aged fortified Muscat from one of Australia's oldest family wineries.
Founded by Samuel Smith at Angaston in the Barossa in 1849, Yalumba is still owned and run by his descendants and has a long history with fortified wines. This Muscat is made in the traditional Australian way. Shrivelled, partly raisined Muscat à Petits Grains grapes, including the brown, red and black forms of the variety, are fermented only briefly on skins before neutral grape spirit is added to stop fermentation and keep the natural sweetness. The young wine then matures for many years in small French and American oak barrels, slowly concentrating as a little evaporates each year. Older and younger wines are blended to keep the style consistent, building the deep amber colour and the luscious, rancio character the supplier describes.
Serve slightly cool in small glasses. It is a fine match for sticky date pudding, Christmas cake, chocolate desserts or blue cheese, or with coffee at the end of a meal. Once opened, keep the bottle in the fridge.
