Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 1.5L MAGNUM 2019

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz in magnum is a generous, spicy Barossa Shiraz in a format built for cellaring and sharing.

Octaves, the tiny oak casks that give this wine its name, are coopered at the Angaston winery, one of the few in Australia still making its own barrels. They leave a firm oak imprint that the Shiraz, drawn from Barossa Valley and Eden Valley vineyards, is chosen to absorb. The 2019 season was dry and low-yielding, and the wine is intense, with dark plum, black cherry and blackberry joined by vanilla, spice, chocolate, black pepper and praline. The palate is rich and balanced, with blackberry pastille, cassis and sage, then roasted nuts and fine, chocolaty tannins.

Decant well ahead and serve at 17 to 18 degrees. Try it with rolled pork belly, beef short ribs or a hard sheep's cheese. Laying it down for ten years or more will bring out further complexity.
