Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 6L 2019

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz 6L is a grand-format bottling of the Barossa Shiraz made in tiny octave barrels.

Holding as much as eight regular bottles, this six-litre format is as much a centrepiece as a wine. The Shiraz inside comes from Barossa Valley and Eden Valley vineyards and spends its time in octaves, small casks coopered on site at Angaston that give the wine fine structure and polish. The 2019 vintage was small and concentrated after a dry season, producing an intense wine of dark plum, black cherry and blackberry with spice, chocolate and black pepper, generous and rich through the palate and finishing with fine, chocolaty tannins.

Plan ahead: rest the bottle upright for a couple of days, then decant into several vessels. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees at a large dinner with slow-cooked beef or roast game. It will age gracefully for many years.
