Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz Wooden Box 2018

Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz is one of the Barossa's most distinctive Shiraz wines, matured in tiny oak barrels called octaves.

An octave is a small cask, much smaller than a standard barrique, and the barrels used for this wine are made by the cooperage at the Angaston winery. Their size gives the wine a high degree of oak contact, so only the most concentrated Shiraz can carry it. Fruit comes from both the Barossa Valley, for depth, and the higher Eden Valley, for freshness and perfume. The 2018 is deep red with purple hues, with dark red cherry, red liquorice and raspberry, and a generous, cool and rich palate. It is sent in a wooden box, making it a handsome gift.

Decant for an hour and serve at 17 to 18 degrees. A slow-roasted beef rib, venison with juniper or a board of aged cheeses would do it justice. It has the structure to age for many years.
