Yalumba The Octavius Shiraz Wooden Box presents this celebrated small-barrel Barossa Shiraz in a gift-ready timber case.

Octaves are the key to this wine: tiny oak casks, built in the family-owned winery's cooperage, that give the Shiraz a closely knit structure and a long life. Fruit is selected from the Barossa Valley and the higher Eden Valley, and only parcels with enough concentration to match the oak make the final blend. A dry growing season in 2019 produced intensely flavoured grapes, and the wine is medium-deep crimson, with dark plum, black cherry and blackberry lifted by vanilla, spice and praline. The palate is generous, with blackberry pastille, cassis and sage, then ginger and roasted nuts before fine tannins.

Give it an hour or two in a decanter and serve at 17 to 18 degrees. It makes a memorable gift, and a fine partner for roast lamb with garlic, a beef and red wine casserole or aged Gouda. Cellar with confidence.
