Yalumba The Tri-Centenary Grenache 2023

Yalumba The Tri-Centenary Grenache is made from some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world, planted at Vine Vale in the Barossa in 1889.

The name reflects the fact that these bush vines have now grown across three centuries: the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first. Such old, low-yielding vines give fruit of real concentration and character, and the winemaking is designed to draw out texture. After fermentation, the wine was left on its skins for 333 days, an extraordinarily long maceration that softens and refines the tannins. The result is light crimson and exotic, with purple flowers, wild red cherry and raspberry, white pepper, cardamom and blood orange, plush early on the palate and silky at the finish.

Serve at 15 to 16 degrees to let its perfume shine, with roast quail, pork and fennel or a mushroom tart. It is lovely now and will evolve gently over the next several years.
