Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier 2023

Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier is the winery's flagship white and one of Australia's most admired Viogniers.

Having planted Viognier in 1980, well before most Australian producers had heard of it, the Angaston team has built deep experience with the grape, including clonal selection through the family's own vine nursery. The Virgilius is made from top Eden Valley parcels, where cool, high sites let the grape ripen slowly and hold its freshness. Oak is used with restraint and is seamlessly integrated. The 2023 is pale gold with green tints, with grilled white peach, ginger, star anise, white pepper, white flowers and lime zest, plus almond meal and a hint of vanilla. The palate is rich, precise and long.

Serve lightly chilled, around 10 to 12 degrees, so its texture can show. It pairs well with lobster, chicken in tarragon cream or fragrant Malaysian curries. It will reward cellaring, gaining extra layers over several years.
