Description
Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Le Grand Clos is the domaine's benchmark hillside Cabernet Franc from Bourgueil.
Bourgueil runs along the north bank of the Loire, sheltered from the north by the forest on the plateau above. Its finest vineyards sit on the tuffeau limestone slope, where Cabernet Franc ripens fully and keeps its acidity. Le Grand Clos is a walled parcel on that slope, with older vines rooted in clay over limestone, and it is the cuvee Yannick Amirault has long used to show what Bourgueil can do. The vineyard is farmed organically, ploughed and picked by hand. The fruit is destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeast and given a long maceration, then matured in used barrels so the wine's structure comes from the site rather than the wood.
Firm and savoury with real depth, it calls for roast or braised red meat, game birds and mushroom dishes, and will keep well. Serve at around 17 degrees.
