Description
Yannick Amirault Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Les Malgagnes is a single-vineyard Cabernet Franc drawn from the domaine's oldest parcel of vines.
Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil lies on the right bank of the Loire, immediately west of Bourgueil, and is planted almost exclusively to Cabernet Franc. The best sites climb off the sand and gravel terraces near the river onto the clay and limestone slope below the plateau, and it is here that Les Malgagnes sits. Yannick Amirault took over the family holding in the early 1980s and has farmed organically for decades, working the soils, harvesting by hand and fermenting with indigenous yeast. The fruit is destemmed, given a long maceration and matured in seasoned oak barrels rather than new wood, so the wine keeps the firm, savoury frame that old-vine Cabernet Franc gives on limestone.
Structured and long, with the graphite-edged grip typical of the site; it suits roast lamb, duck and hard cheeses, and rewards a few years in bottle. Serve at around 16 to 17 degrees.
