Yokel Chenin Blanc 2023

Yokel Chenin Blanc is a dry Swan Valley Chenin Blanc made by Jo Perry of Dormilona.

Jo Perry's second label looks east to the Swan Valley instead of the coast. Hand-harvested Chenin from the Pinelli Vineyard was pressed very gently as whole bunches and split across large-format oak, amphorae and tank, so each portion develops a slightly different texture. The wine was stirred for about a month, its natural malolactic was allowed to run, and it was then racked to bottle with only a trace of sulphur. The Swan Valley is hot, old and quietly excellent at Chenin Blanc, a variety planted there long before it became fashionable anywhere else in the country.

Bright and dry, with green apple, lemon and a honeyed note underneath, and enough texture from the lees to carry food. Serve at 10 degrees. It works with grilled prawns, a chicken salad, soft cheese and bread, or dumplings with chilli oil.
