Zalto Glas is a family glassworks in Austria's Kremstal, where every piece is mouth-blown by hand and made without lead, the bowls angled to 24, 48 and 72 degrees after the tilt of the earth. The Bordeaux glass is aimed squarely at wines rich in structure and fruit concentration, and at wines with a lot of tannin to carry. Its bowl is broader at the base than the usual Bordeaux stem, so a powerful wine has room to open, and the walls then close towards the rim and gather the aromatics again before they reach the nose. The effect is harmony in wines that can otherwise arrive as sheer weight or sheer grip. It suits Bordeaux itself, along with Brunello di Montalcino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, and is equally convincing with Nebbiolo, Gamay and Pinot, so do not read the name too narrowly.
