Zalto Glas is a family glassworks in Austria's Kremstal, where every piece is mouth-blown by hand and made without lead, the bowls angled to 24, 48 and 72 degrees after the tilt of the earth. The Burgundy shape is the one to reach for when a wine needs air and time. Its broad bowl exposes a large surface, so the separate components of a wine lift and settle in turn and the picture arrives in detail rather than all at once. That suits wines that are tightly wound, and equally those that are old and complex, where nothing should be missed. Wines that are young and openly fruity are usually better served by one of the smaller shapes in the range, which hold them together instead of spreading them out. The Zalto angle keeps the bowl elegant despite its width, and the walls stay thin throughout.
