Zalto Glas is a family glassworks in Austria's Kremstal, where every piece is mouth-blown by hand and made without lead, the bowls angled to 24, 48 and 72 degrees after the tilt of the earth. The Universal sits between the White Wine and Burgundy shapes and covers most of the ground between them. Its bowl gives full-bodied, powerful or developed wines the room to show intensity, while the way the walls close towards the rim keeps the finer, more complex end of the wine in the picture rather than losing it under fruit weight. It handles most Italian wines, though older Nebbiolo is often happier in the Burgundy glass, along with mature whites and reds from anywhere. Mature Chablis, Riesling, Chianti, Beaujolais and Australian wines young or old are all good candidates, as is grower Champagne.

If one shape has to serve the whole table, this is the one; supplied as a two pack. Hand-wash in warm water without detergent and dry with a lint-free cloth.
